Dr. B.G. Buchanan was born to Carl and Nettie Buchanan in Powell, Oklahoma, on May 30 1944. He lived there until his family moved to Fort Worth, Texas, where he would spend the remainder of his young life. He met and married Sarita Ann Duncan on November 16 1962. While working at a helicopter plant in Fort Worth, a co-worker began witnessing to him and invited him to church. He began attending Bible Baptist Church in Diamond Hill, Texas, and was born again in May of 1965. Soon after his conversion, in June of 1965, he felt the call of God to preach the Gospel. He attended Bible Baptist Seminary in Arlington, Texas, and began pastoring Tabernacle Baptist Church during the last few years of his education.
In 1972, he began pastoring the Bible Baptist Church in Wichita Falls, Texas. Under his leadership, the church grew and many souls were saved. In 1977, at the advice of then Pastor Dr. Bob Smith, and feeling the call of God, Dr. Buchanan came to Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Central Baptist Church. Originally located at 5050 Greenwell Street in Baton Rouge, Central Baptist Church began to be richly blessed, and its ministries and influence began to grow mightily. In 1989, the church purchased its current property at 17017 Florida Blvd. and began building its first auditorium.
With its new building and property, the Church continued to grow. The faithful preaching of Dr. Buchanan and the ministry of Central Baptist Church would provide a much-needed stronghold for the Gospel in southern Louisiana. Men of God from all over the country came and were used of the Lord to encourage the church in His service. Over the next few years however, God saw fit to bless the church with the need of another auditorium. Construction began on the new building in June of 2000, and was completed in August of 2001.
Over the last thirty-nine years, Dr. Buchanan has led Central Baptist Church to be a people dedicated to Jesus Christ. In all that time he has not wavered. Though many other men and churches have come and gone, Dr. Buchanan has abided faithful; and through his faithfulness to the truth of God’s Word, he has been used of God to mightily influence not only the state of Louisiana but the entire country. To this day there are hundreds of pastors, teachers, church staff, sunday school workers, and faithful men and women of God who owe their ministries to the legacy of this man and this church. Only eternity will tell the measure of the life of this man we call our preacher. His son, Pastor B.G. Buchanan, Jr. has become our new pastor. B.G. Buchanan, Sr. is now our Pastor Emeritus.
